WHO we are

Steve Schmeichel (605) 366-9532

Growing up in an extended family of farmers, it's no wonder Steve has both the passion and knowledge for this vocation. A 3rd generation farmer, his father, grandfather and great-uncles were involved in both the seed and livestock business long before he was born (many, MANY years ago)! That tradition has driven him to grow S&S Ag into the diverse, family-operated, agriculture supply company that it is today.

Top-notch service is a priority to Steve, but if he doesn’t answer his phone or respond to your email right away, it’s probably because he’s also very busy serving his community. He currently serves on the Merchants State Bank Board of Directors, Salem Mennonite Home Board of Directors, Turner County Zoning Board and the Turner County Pork Producers Board. That list could easily extend on and on, but he tries to spare just a little time to enjoy sporting events, hunt, attend hog shows, promote pork and spend time with his family.

Joe Schaefer (605) 254-3690

We’re not sure how Joe did in his high school algebra class, but what we do know is that he has the right equation to produce successful harvest results for all of his agronomy customers. Growing up selling seed with his dad, he’s seen how a well-constructed farm plan can yield big dividends, and that’s what his goal is for each and every grower he works with. Joe loves working with farmers who share the same drive and passion that he has, because with the hard work of our customers, combined with the product recommendations and technology expertise from Joe, you’re sure to be harvesting great results year after year. When he isn’t entertaining S&S Ag coworkers with his gut-busting impressions, Joe likes to fish, camp and spend time with his wife, Marin, and his 3 children, Mason, Mariah and Eli.

Ethan Schmeichel (605) 929-0890

Ever since he was little, Ethan has been fascinated with taking things apart and trying to put them back together. Not much has changed since then, except he has moved on from old televisions and radios and now prefers pickups, tractors, combines and Louisiana grills. He is your go-to guy at S&S Ag for anything mechanical or technical, but don’t let that fool you. Growing up on the farm helping his dad, Steve, he also has an abundance of knowledge in the seed and livestock sectors. Ethan owns an old auto body shop in downtown Freeman, where he works on old cars and pickups in his spare time. When his head isn’t hidden under the hood of a vehicle, he enjoys spending time with his wife, Jess, and their friends, and hunting with his two red labs, Jenny and Misty.

Paula VerDouw

Although she’s been making her mark in the big city for the last decade, this farm girl has returned to her roots to turn S&S Ag into the fine-tuned machine that it is today. Part accountant, part administrator, part social media marketer, part organizational aficionado, Paula wears many hats within the organization and is adding more every day – both on her resume and in her closet. So, whether it’s mailing statements, writing Facebook posts, or playing party-planner for the next crawdad feed, you’ll find her behind the scenes – and she’s just fine with that! In her limited free time as a new mom, she enjoys watching Augustana basketball games, eating out and trying new foods, and going on walks with her husband, Tom, daughter, Vail and two puggles, Max and Molly.

Calvin Janssen

Truly our go-to guy for anything involving precise measurements or intricate parts, Calvin is our dependable technician across all S&S Ag product lines. Whether he is assembling grills and mowers, installing Precision Planting equipment, or delivering seed in the spring, his patience and attention to detail bring an unmeasurable amount of value to customers. Splitting his time between Schmeichel Farms and S&S Ag Supply, Calvin is able to utilize both his farming background and mechanical skillset on a daily basis. In his free time, Calvin enjoys hanging out with friends, working on his pickups and tractors, and managing and growing the small farm that his dad started.

Brandon Van Osdel

Brandon can only see the 3 primary colors – red, yellow and blue. Or maybe it’s just that he’s a little bit partial to them since they represent his beloved SDSU jackrabbits and Case IH farm equipment. But no matter what farm machinery you use or which team you root for, Brandon is eager use his comprehensive farming background and education to help growers maximize their profits. A Gayville, SD native and recent SDSU graduate, Brandon is the newest face at S&S Ag and is spearheading our efforts to reach farmers southeast of headquarters. He has the gift of gab and loves talking with complete strangers, so don’t be surprised if you see a friendly but unfamiliar face coming down your driveway! In addition to serving as a volunteer EMT and farming with his family, Brandon enjoys boating, golfing, playing “farmer league” basketball and spending time with friends and family.
